About Loten Namling
Loten Namling, the winner of 2012 Free Spirit Award, will present a concert of Tibetan songs and stories in Tibetan Canadian Culture Centre at 40 Titan Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canadaon January 26th, 2013 at 5:00PM
Loten, meaning in Tibetan “The White Crane” is the artist’s stage name. His real name is Namling Lobsang Tenzin, the son of Tibetan refugee who was born in Dharamsala in 1963. At the age of fifteen his parents gave him danyen, six string Tibetan lute as a present.
Since 1989 Loten lives inSwitzerland. Here he recorded the album “Songs of Tibet”, where the wonderful songs of three folk traditions – from Amdo, U-tsang and Kham- are collected. His interest to the modern western music impelled him creating the project “Tibet-blues“, on which Loten is working now. “In my songs I celebrate the past and pray for the freedom ofTibet”, – says Loten. And thousand audiences around the world support him.
Loten is also a noted Indian-born singer, musician artist, entertainer and cartoonist. He connects songs of the past to the reality of the present, taking his audience on a journey through the landscape of Tibetan spirituality.
On May 16th, 2012, Namling began what he called A Journey for Freedom – One Man, One Path, Tibet. He walked from the Swiss capital Bern to Geneva, dragging a black coffin inscribed “Free Tibet”, in order to attract attention to the Tibetans’ worsening situation in today’s China. On July, 8th 2012 he arrived in Geneva, where he performed with the Swiss band, The Young Gods in a concert organized by The Young Gods singer, Franz Treichler in support of Loten’s action, held in front of Geneva UN headquarters. In October 2012, Namling was given the Free Spirit Award in McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala, India, (Little Lhasa in India) for his “Journey of Freedom March”.
