During the 7th Century AD Songstem Gampo [སྲོང་བཙན་སྒམ་པོ་] (569-649AD), the 33rd king of the Yarlung Dynasty of southern Tibet and the first Emperor of Tibet, sent Thonmi Sambhota, one of his ministers, to India to gather information on Buddhism. The minister then reputedly devised a script for Tibetan based on the Devanagari model and also wrote a grammar of Tibetan based on Sanskrit grammars.  Click Here to learn more about the Tibetan alphabets

In the early 1970's when there were just a few families here in Canada.  Parents taught the Tibetan language to their children as there were no schools that taught the Tibetan Language.  The few families that were settled in the Lindsay and Peterborough in Ontario also organized language classes on weekends where parents took turns and volunteered teaching the language.  There were some parents that even sent their children to India for a couple of months during the children's summer vacation to learn the language and the rich custom and traditions of Tibet

In the year 1999, with the influx of more Tibetans to Ontario and with an attempt to preserve Tibet's rich culture and traditions, the Tibetan Parents Association was formed.  This was the result of some of the parents and the teacher's collective efforts.  The purpose of the organization was to undertake the administration of the Tibetan Language and Dance Programs.  This group worked under the governance of the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario.  The program was successful and this year (2008) the Parents Association was dissolved and therefore the Tibetan language and dance classes are now administered by the Tibetan Canadian Culture Centre.  Regular classes are held every Saturday and more information is available under the programs section of this site.
